One of the great things about being a designer is finding inspiration in unexpected places; lots of different things catch my eye and feed into my work. At the moment I’m obsessed with blue and white ceramics. I adore all the shades of blue, from indigo to aqua and the delicate, handmade designs and I love the way beautiful ceramics can be used in the home. A lot of the designs remind me of drawings or the blotchy finish of monoprints – it’s funny how things cross over different creative worlds.
Paula Greif makes small scale and appealing pieces that it’s easy to imagine using. They are homely, hand drawn, slightly misshapen. She says she wants to “keep making things that are useful and beautiful” – sounds good to me.
Sue Binns also makes lovely pieces that would fit in any kitchen, with wonderful stripes in warm blues. I love the elongated shapes of these jugs.
I’m inspired to have a go at making my own pottery soon. And to expand my collection of blue and white china!
